I am so excited to have Lauren Dane as my guest today. She is one of my absolute authors.
Can you tell everyone a little bit about yourself?
Well I’m Lauren Dane and I’ve been writing professionally since 2004 when I sold my first book, Triad to Ellora’s Cave. I live in the Northwest with my very patient husband and three very wild children. When I’m not writing or picking children up, I’m trying to pretend that stack of laundry four feet high is invisible. (What? Everyone else in this house does!)
How long have you been writing?
Pretty much my whole life. I’ve written poetry and short stories for as long as I can remember. In high school and college I wrote editorials and essays for the newspaper, etc. It wasn’t until I was on bed rest for a high risk pregnancy that I had the time and thought I should give professional novel writing a try.
What is your writing process like?
Well I’ve got three kids and a husband so my days are filled with lots of non writing stuff, picking up, dropping off, making food, doing laundry, grocery shopping – all that jazz. So my main time to write is at night after everyone goes down for quiet time and bed.
I write about three hours or so every night and whatever I can manage during the day and I can usually turn out about 3K words daily, sometimes more, sometimes less.
Procedurally? I usually start out with a yellow lined legal pad and 3×5 cards and I begin to draw the world and characters. I sketch out a loose outline for most of my books these days (since I have to submit with synopses anyway). Then I start writing.
Most of the time, I learn my characters and why they do what they do as I go along. They reveal themselves to me as I write, which is always a wonderful thing when I have that “AHA!!” moment with each book and it all clicks into place.
Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming releases Holiday Seduction, Sweet Charity & Undercover?
Holiday Seduction
Holiday Seduction is a print anthology with the ever so talented Jaci Burton. She and I wrote holiday novellas last year at the holidays and Samhain decided to put them together in print. My story is To Do List which is a contemporary friends to lovers, erotic romance featuring Belle, a very anal retentive lawyer and Rafe, a very laid back farmer and set in Davis, California. She’s working through some big changes in her life and her career and he’s got to let it happen.
Sweet Charity
Sweet Charity, which comes out digitally on December 23, follows a year later from To Do List with Rafe’s brother Gabriel and a family friend, Charity. Rafe is a very bad boy and Charity happens to be a very nice girl and a friend since childhood. They had a horrible one night stand ten years before and she has wondered if it was her fault ever since. He’s been holding her off since then thinking that was best for her, that she needed a nice guy and she’s finally had it and drops herself into his life and seduces him. It was a lot of fun to write, a wonderful friends to lovers story and some opposites attract stuff too.
Undercover
And Undercover, which is my first single title from Berkley Heat comes out December 2. It’s a futuristic ménage erotic romance with BDSM elements. It’s about a female soldier, Sera, who lost the great love of her life, Ash, ten years prior only to find herself thrust into an assignment with him and his partner, Brandt. There’s a bit of suspense because there are traitors in their midst and she has to go undercover, posing as Brandt’s lover and before long, Ash’s too and the game turns real.

Where do you get your ideas for your books?
Oh all over the place! Sometimes a song lyric, sometimes a snippet of dialog will come to me, or I’ll see a picture and think about a hero or heroine. I got the idea for Triad from a trip to New Orleans (pre Katrina). It’s such a magical city it just appealed to me to be the setting for a story filled with magic.
Other than paranormal, do you write in any other romance sub-genre? If not would you like to and if so what sub-genres?
I write contemporary, futuristic, speculative fiction, urban fantasy and paranormal. I wish I had the voice to write historicals, I love to read them, but I just don’t have it.
Do your characters talk to you? (If so who talks more your heroes or heroines?)
No. But they do find their way into more scenes than I intend sometimes – Polly Chase is very pushy when I write. She likes page time! And Nina Reyes-Warden from my Cascadia Wolves series is like that as well.
As an author, you must be an avid reader. What books do you enjoy reading? Who are your auto-buy authors?
I love to read and I read across pretty much every genre. I love science fiction of most stripes from Asimov’s Foundation and Robot books to William Gibson’s cyber punk. I like dystopian novels a lot – Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale is a favorite. Post apocalyptic novels, horror, some fantasy also find their way into my TBR pile. I love romance across the board from historicals to futuristics.
As for auto buy authors? I am a huge Linda Howard fan, Anne Stuart (who can break all my “OH NO YOU DIDN’T” rules and I love her anyway), William Gibson, Margaret Atwood, Sheri Tepper, Frank Herbert, Marge Piercy, Jaci Burton, Megan Hart, Kim Harrison, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Charlaine Harris, Lisa Kleypas, Patricia Briggs, Eileen Wilks, Cynthia Eden, Ann Aguirre, Maya Banks, old Elizabeth Lowell novels – I’m sure I’m leaving people out.
What books are on your keep shelf?
All of the Foundation books and the Robot books by Isaac Asimov, The Dune Series by Frank Herbert, Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive by William Gibson, Richard Morgan’s Altered Carbon, the Kim Harrison Hollows books, Jenny Crusie’s Welcome To Temptation, JD Robb’s Naked In Death, Lisa Kleypas’ Devil in Winter, SEP’s Match Me If You Can, Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Stoker’s Dracula, Stephen King’s The Stand, Linda Howard’s Mr. Perfect and After the Night, Emma Holly’s Personal Assets
Do you read books other than romance books?
Sure!
What was the first romance book you read?
Welcome to Temptation and Emma Holly’s Menage
If one of your books was made into a movie, which book would you like it to be and which actors would like to see as the lead characters?
Oh my, this is so hard! Probably Relentless which comes out in May of 09 from Berkley Heat with Daniel Craig as Roman Lyons and Salma Hayek as Abbie.
If you could switch lives with one of your characters who would if be & why?
I’m pretty lucky in my life! But I wouldn’t complain to be Tracy from TriMates!
What are you currently working on?
Always – a contemporary romance set in Seattle – for Samhain.
When you are not writing or reading, what do you enjoying doing in your spare time?
Hanging out with my kids or husband. Reading. Having lunch with friends. Book shopping!
