My guest today is Eden Bradley

21stcenturycourtesan1

Eden, Thanks for agreeing to be a guest on my blog.

Can you tell everyone a little bit about yourself?

I was born in California, have always lived here, and can’t imagine living anywhere else. I have a great love for good food, tattoos, and sexy shoes. My shameful secret is watching the trashiest reality TV shows I can find. Almost anything else I will talk about publicly and shamelessly.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing since I was a kid, really, but it only occurred to me to write with publication in mind about eight years ago.

What is your writing process like?

Very undisciplined and a bit manic, unfortunately. Ideas come to me pretty randomly- while I’m in the shower, driving, falling asleep at night, waking up in the morning, talking with a friend. I make notes as the ideas come. It can be character details, setting, premise, bits of dialogue, scenarios.  Next I sit down and really hash out an outline, which consists mostly of a very intense exploration of my characters, as my books are always character-driven, rather than plot-driven.

When it comes time to actually write, I have to have my music, and I tend to fuel up on chocolate. Currently, I’m on peanut butter M&M’s-the food of the gods!

Can you tell us about your new release A 21st Century Courtesan?

I think this is my best writing to date, and my editor allowed me to explore some challenging material in this book and to write it in first person, which I love. I feel it really allows the reader to get right inside the heroine’s head.

A 21ST CENTURY COURTESAN is about Valentine Day, a high-class call girl. She’s been doing it for years, and has been happy with her life, until she meets a man who makes her re-evaluate her life choices, and who she wants to be. The hero, Joshua Spencer, is smart and sexy-he’s actually modeled after someone I know. And despite the fact that Valentine is a prostitute, there is probably more of me in her than any of my other heroines. It’s a story about tough choices, about re-creating oneself, finding love, and it’s definitely a sexy story.

Do you have any other books coming out this year?

Yes! On April 7th TEMPT ME TWICE, an erotic ménage novella, my first release from Samhain, will be out. And in October my next erotic novel from Bantam/Delta, THE BEAUTY OF SURRENDER, will be out. This is a two-part book about Shibari, a beautiful and sensual form of Japanese rope bondage. And my first Harlequin Spice Briefs story, SOUL STRANGERS, is part of the recently released print anthology, NAUGHTY BITS. It’s on the shelves now. You can find more information about all of my books on my website: http://www.edenbradley.com/

What are you currently working on?

Right now I’m polishing the end of THE BEAUTY OF SURRENDER. Next up is my first full-length erotic novel for Harlequin Spice, currently called DESIDERATA: THE LOVERS-but the title may change. I can’t wait to really get into this book! It’s an unusual story with a sort of ensemble cast of characters, about a writer who goes on a summer writing retreat and meets some people who make her question herself as a sexual being, and ultimately change her life. I’m also working on outlining a new BDSM-themed novella for Samhain. This one should have a few nice twists. Okay, wicked twists…

Where do you get your ideas for your books?

Everywhere! From music fairly often, but it’s more a mood or a tone than the actual premise. Some stories are taken from my real life experiences. Some pop into my head out of the blue. It’s always a mystery to me-that’s part of the magic.

Many of your books deal with D/s theme, is there any particular reason why?

I’ve talked very openly about my experiences in the BDSM lifestyle. One thing I’ve discovered is the complex psychology behind why people seek extreme forms of sexuality, and as someone who once pursued a psychology degree, this is endlessly fascinating to me. Why do we do the things we do, crave those things which are considered to be outside the realm of the usual human experience? Exploring these issues in my books makes for deeper, more complex characters. The power play involved makes for some really interesting relationship dynamics. And the sex is just a lot more varied and exciting-fun!

As an author, you must be an avid reader. What books do you enjoy reading? Who are your auto-buy authors?

So many! I love chick lit and romantic comedy. I love Gemma Halliday, Sophie Kinsella, Megan Crane, and Lilli Feisty has done some awesome comedic erotic fiction. On the darker side, almost anything by Tanith Lee, I love to read Anne Rice’s erotica, and I think Megan Hart and Donna George Storey write really smart erotic fiction. But I’m leaving out dozens of authors!

I’m also a long-time fan of science fiction, so Robert Heinlein, Robert Silverberg, and I love Elizabeth Bear.

What books are on your keeper shelf?

Tanith Lee’s Silver Metal Lover, Megan Hart’s Dirty, Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty series, Exit to Eden, and Belinda, William Goldman’s The Princess Bride, Elizabeth Bear’s Hammered, Erica Jong’s Fanny, Gemma Halliday’s entire High Heels mystery series. And for classic romance, Nora Roberts’ Three Sisters Island trilogy.

What was the first romance book you read?

Something borrowed from my grandmother’s bookshelf around age ten or eleven. Probably a historical. Is it terrible that I can’t remember that far back?

If one of your books was made into a movie, which book would you like it to be and which actors would like to see as the lead characters?

I’d love to see my latest release, A 21ST CENTURY COURTESAN, made into a movie, but I’ve never thought to cast it. Off the top of my head, Valentine could be played by Kate Beckinsale, maybe. And Joshua…that’s a bit harder for me. He’s more rugged than your average pretty boy. Hmm…Gerard Butler could fill the role nicely.

If you could switch lives with one of your characters who would if be & why?

I wouldn’t mind switching lives with Rowan, the heroine in my first novel, THE DARK GARDEN.  She’s been through a lot, but she’s a strong person who knows what she wants and ultimately finds a really beautiful and precious love.

When you are not writing or reading, what do you enjoying doing in your spare time?

I love to shop, especially for shoes, but I’m happy shopping for anything, even if I don’t buy, although my favorite quickie retail fix is new underwear-anything cute (cotton, with Hello Kitty, hearts or stars) or lacy stuff. I love the process, looking at pretty things, and I’m a very tactile shopper; I have to touch everything. Lounging at the beach is a favorite past time, and one which I’ve done far too little of the last couple of years. But my favorite thing is probably just spending time with friends, eating, sitting around and talking. And I love to watch movies.

If you could ask readers anyone question, what would it be?

I’d love to know what they’re looking for in erotic fiction so I know what to give them. There’s enormous satisfaction in knowing I’ve entertained my readers, or touched them in some way.

  1. Good Morning Eden:

Wonderful interview and it’s such a pleasure to see you here.

I’ve read both of your short stories in “Hot Nights and Dark Desires”, and in “Exclusive”. I thoroughly enjoyed both of them and I have “Forbidden Fruit”, waiting in my TBR. I’m really hoping to read it soon.

I actually read your stories more than once because stories were not only enjoyable from a erotic standpoint, it was the complexity of the relationships that left a lasting impression. I have to say, until I read your stories, I was very uncomfortable with BDSM themed books, however your stories have helped me to become more comfortable.

I read Greta’s review of “A 21st Century Cortesan”, and your description above. It sounds like an awesome and unique story. I will look forward to the read. “Tempt Me Twice”, also sounds wonderful. I think I’m going to have lots of wonderful “Eden Bradley”, reading ahead!

    Best Regards

  2. Sounds like an interesting story. I don’t know if I’ve ever read any of your work but it sounds interesting.

    Great interview Greta.

    hugs,

  4. What a gorgeous cover! I’m very interested in this book and would love to win a copy to read and review on my blog!

  5. Hi Eden,
Thanks so much for being on this blog. I have not read any of your books yet, but after reading more about them am really interested to try one out, especially Tempt Me Twice!

  6. Oh! I really liked this interview – thanks Eden! I haven’t actually read any of your stuff yet, but I have a few of your books on my TBB shelf. The new release sounds very sexy. I really appreciate you sharing about your writing “habits”.
In answer to your question, I’m a big fan of the “D/s theme” in fiction – can never get enough! hehe

  7. Beautiful cover, I love it!

  8. Hi, Eden! Like Bonnie, I’ve a couple of your titles on my TBR. As for what I’m looking for in erotic fiction, I love stories that give me a peek at lives I don’t get to live, and especially ones that also explore the emotion connections. Reading to me is primarily escape and living vicariously, so stories that do that for me are keepers 🙂

  9. Great interview! I think my bank account is fixing to take another hit. Thanks for that, Greta, LOL. A 21st Century Courtesan sounds great, and I will definitely be getting Tempt Me Twice on the 7th.

  10. Hey Eden!

Whenever people talk about erotic romance and BDSM, your name comes up frequently. You clearly have this genre down to a science and want to know how you’ve become so adept? Your books are written so eloquently, and the characters have so much to offer. Keep on writing and bringing us such wonderful stories.

  11. Great interview! Thank you for visiting with your readers, Eden. I recently read Soul Strangers and thought it was one of the most touching, fleshed-out short stories I’ve ever read. It was incredible. I love your writing, and I’ve been looking forward to A 21st Century Courtesan for ages! That title is awesome!

    Thanks again, ladies!

  12. I love hearing how other writer’s get their ideas. And I especially love seeing that I’m not the only undisciplined writer out there. That’s great, LOL.

Great post and great interview, Eden!

  13. Great interview. 🙂 Your book sounds great. Love the cover.

  14. I’ve seen promos for this book and it always catches my attention – the cover is amazing.
This will have to go in my TBR pile, if not for the great cover and what I’ve read so far, but for the commonality of good food, tattoos and shoes! 😉

    Great Interview!

  15. Wow-I went off to work for a while and came back to so many lovely responses! Thanks to all of you who’ve shared what you’re looking for in erotic romance.
Fedora-my favorite part of writing is exploring those emotional connection- that’s what makes writing about love, sex and intimacy so fascinating!
And Jessica-I love, love, love this cover! The subject matter is a bit heavy-duty, so I’m glad the art department chose an image that gets the sensuality of the book across. Plus, it’s just pretty. 🙂

  16. Hello Eden, Great interview. I can’t wait to get read 21st Centrry Courtesan. The cover is lovely!

You asked what readers like in erotic fiction? Well I guess I like to see a world that I’m not normally privy to, like D/s- BDSM or menage books. I also like the characters to have personality and depth and show some type of personal growth. I like all genres, modern, historical and even some futuristic story lines.

Thanks for sharing yourself with us:-)

  17. Great interview. I can’t wait until this book comes out. It looks amazing.

  18. A 21st Century Courtesan sounds great! Menages, pirates, cowboys, and time travel.

  19. Hi Eden!!
So much more to look forward to of yours as well as the new book! I have to say, I love the cover, beautiful! I remember starting your books with your ebooks! Is it much different for you now with writing your books for the print publisher than the ebook publisher?

I love many themes in erotic romances, including menages, romance suspense, like SEALs, and just everyday ordinary heroes!, bounty hunters, sherriff, cowboys, lawmen, all in contemps, historical, paranormal, etc! And love the BDSMtheme. What other genres you will be writing under with this theme?

  20. Hi Eden and Greta, thank you for a very interesting interview. I really enjoyed how connected Eden is to her characters/stories in many different ways. As for what I look for in erotic fiction, I think I’ve mentioned it before: maturity. That’s why I’ve always enjoyed Eden’s stories as I find the characters are very mature/serious yet still have the vulnerabilities that make their stories interesting. Looking forward to the latest!

  21. Thanks for your comments, everyone! It seems that a lot of you are looking for BDSM, which is a specialty of mine, so I guess I’ll have to write more! I am working on a proposal for a BDSM novel right now, so hopefully it will sell-fingers crossed! Meanwhile, I’m planning another menage story for Samhain-this one with a paranormal twist, which I haven’t done a lot of, so I’m excited.
Caffey-yes, writing for the New York print publishers is different, but it’s all good. I still write e-books because I love to write shorter, and my e-book publishers give me a bit more freedom in what I can write. And I love to be able to offer both formats to my readers. I don’t know that I’ll ever give up writing e-books.
Thanks so much for your feedback, everyone, and to Greta fro having me!
