Q&A with Melissa Schroeder

Melissa, Thank-you for agreeing to an interview today.

Thanks so much for having me here today!

Can you tell everyone a little bit about yourself?

I am a military wife with two kids. I grew up in the military so it is really just old hat for me. Of course, with that background, I have lived all over the place from Ohio to Germany to Hawaii but right now, we are living in Virginia.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing in college, but mostly very melodramatic short stories. They were filled with angst. Then, I tried everything. Suspense, cozy mysteries, then I accidently picked up a romance in 1999, and that is when I started writing romance.

What is your writing process like?

It changes constantly. But for the most part, I am back to my old ways. I will sketch out a light plot, get my character studies down, then I write like a crazy person, putting out 4-5,000 words a day. It is very rough and usually ends up about 75% total when I finish the rough draft. I let it sit for a month, then I go back and do 3-4 edits of it.

Can you tell us about your newest release Conquering India: Texas Temptations #1?

This is my first full ménage. India came to me a year or so ago. She is a lot of fun, but a little lost. She has everything back on track in her life after splitting with her cheating ex, but her personal life. She hasn’t really dated since her divorce. When she is hired to cater a party for Marc and Wade’s security company, Wade gets it in his head that India is the one for them. It was fun to watch Wade trying to convince both India and Marc that it could work.

Is this beginning of a new series for you?

Yes, I have at least two more planned. The first one is Delilah’s Downfall. The second is as yet unnamed.

Do you have any other books releasing this year?

Yes. I have a rerelease in June from WCP, Hands On Training. I rewrote it and expanded it by about 30K.

Next I have two Samhain releases, A Little Harmless Obsession in August, and The Spy Who Loved Her (the sequel to Lessons in Seduction) due in December.

What are you currently working on?

That is always a loaded question. Because of my ADD I usually have several projects going. Right now, I am finishing up The Spy Who Loved Her, but I am also working on Delilah’s Downfall (plotting it), and I am working on two unsigned paranormals, The Cursed Clan and By Blood. Next up is A Little Harmless Addiction.

As an author, you must be an avid reader. What books do you enjoy reading? Who are your auto-buy authors?

OY, this is huge. Right now, I am huge into historical. It is my favorite genre to read and there is enough of it out there. My fave that I always buy is Liz Carlyle. I like Stephanie Laurens too, but Liz is my fave. I love Nora Robert’s suspenses, and I love, love, love Shayla Black’s erotics. I love her brethren too, but really, her contemporary erotics make my day.

What books are on your keeper shelf?

Really? I have too many to name, seriously.

What was the first romance book you read or the one book that has stood the test of time for you?

First book, Linda Howard’s All the Queen’s Men. I actually thought it was just a suspense. I read it in ONE DAY. But, I have one book I always go back to and that is Nora Roberts’ Carnal Innocence. I just love the hero in the story and she really gets the setting right. Oh, and Howard’s After the Fire. Love that book.

If one of your books was made into a movie, which actors would like to see as the lead characters?

Hmm, I think I would like Brad Pitt and Minnie Driver in A Little Harmless Sex. Of course Brad would have to bulk up a bit 🙂

If you could switch lives with one of your characters who would if be & why?

MILA in Hunting Mila. That woman knows how to handle anything from tea parties to invading aliens. And she knows just how to get herself out of sticky situations.

When you are not writing or reading, what do you enjoying doing in your spare time?

I like to spend a lot of time with my kids and husband. For so many years, I had to write at night because the kids were young and I was too busy during the day. So, I like to spend a lot of my extra time with them.

My oldest is a freshman and I know we only have a few years left together like this. So, one of our favorite things to do is watch shows that I missed the beginning of (because I used to write at night) and she was too young to watch. We made it through Bones, we are now on NCIS 🙂

My youngest is a writer. She is eight and has been writing books and reading them to the class. So, we put her books together. She writes and illustrates them, then we staple them together.

Other than that, I am learning Reiki healing. More for myself, really because it has helped me with my back problems.

If you could ask readers one question, what would it be?

If you could choose an erotic genre for the next Harmless book (after A Little Harmless Addiction) what would it be? Ménage, bdsm, straight contemp, etc?

Where can readers find you on the internet?

I am all over the place:

I am one of the wicked writers:

  1. Love to the Melissa! I don’t tend to read the erotics as much, but I’d go for the straight contemporary or elements of suspense — because I love when suspense combines with other genres!

  2. A menage with a bit of BDSM thrown in is my personal favorite.

  3. Hey Melissa,

Great interview and I would say that you should make the next Harmless a paranormal thing. But not vampires maybe demons or transdimensinonal aliens. lol

  4. Menage is my definite favorite. I cant wait to read about India. Great interview I look forward to reading your books

  5. Thanks for a great interview, I love to find out more about my favorite authors!
Ménage is my favorite too, who can resist two gorgeous heroes.

  6. Hi Melissa! The next book should be light BDSM. The only ménage I like to read now is m/m/f…

  7. Hi Melissa,
I would love to read a menage/bdsm themed story. Conquering India looks fabulous…

    Congratulations on the new release!

  8. Hi Melissa- great interview. I would love to read a light BDSM book. Nothing to heavy but definitely master/dom elements.

  9. Menage with a little BDSM. My favs are your Accidental Series. I read them over and over and laugh every time.

  10. Great Interview!
After reading the excepts from Conqering India…I really do want the book now.
Would love to see the menage theme for your next Harmless book.

  11. Heather,
Actually, my upcoming Samhain release, A Little Harmless Obession, has a little suspense in it and I have a few other books, Her Mother’s Killer and Grace Under Pressure both have suspense elements.

  12. Rayna,
Not sure if I could do a paranormal in that series, but I do have some ideas down the road for some erotic paranormals.

  13. Donna,
That is actually what I am thinking about doing for the next one after A Little Harmless Addiction.

  14. Sara,
Thank you so much! I am going to have quite a few menages coming out this year. My next one is a rerelease of Hands On Training, then I have two more planned to submit for a release this year, a Christmas one that will kick off a three book series of menages and Delilah’s Downfall, the sequel to Conquering India.

  15. Eva,
Thank you so much! I did really enjoy writing the menage. I think the next harmless one after addiction will be a menage. Playing with a few ideas right now.

  16. Anna,
That is EXACTLY what I am thinking. There is a guy in A Little Harless Obesession, a six foot tall, hair down to his butt Dom Native American, who I think might be one of the heroes.

  17. Maria,
Thanks! Yeah, I do like those guys who like to be in charge, lol.

  18. Desi,
thanks a lot. I always say the greatest compliment to get is to have a reader say that they reread your book over and over.
I do love writing the historicals and hope to finish up the rough draft for The Spy Who Loved Her this month!

  19. Lynda,
Thank you! I was hoping they would have it on preorder by today, but it has not happened. Hoping for tomorrow though. Fingers crossed.

  20. Thanks, Rhonda!

  21. I’m a big fan of reading menages. I especially like them when there’s a m/m slant to it.

  22. I like a little BDSM with my erotic romance.

  23. oh, thanks, Estella. A Little Harmless Obesssion has quite a bit of it in there. Evan is a true Dom and it was a real joy writing his and May’s story.
There is a little bit of bondage fun in Hands On Training, but not like in the next Harmless book which is out in August,

  24. Hi Melissa, I am a sucker for a menage story, so would love that genre for your upcoming Harmless book. Great trailer for India, and the excerpt was a wonderful tease.

  25. I’ll go with the majority and ask for a menagé and BDSM combo. Especially since you do both so well!!

  26. Great interview.
Menage with elements of bdsm works for me. Both among my faves.

  27. Thanks, Cathy! I have a new one up on my blog today. I really do think the fifth Harmless book will end up being a menage and since Micah will be involved, it will be a BDSM situation:)

  28. Ahhh, thanks, Lynn. You are such a sweetie.

  29. Beth,
Thanks so much! It seems that is what the majority of readers want so that is probably the way I will go!

  30. […] Monday. It is just a little scene with Wade and India. I hope you enjoy it. And be sure to stop by I Do Not Want to Wait blog! Greta gave me a great interview and I am giving away a […]

  31. Um, I love a good M/F/M menage and throw in some light bondage and it would be fantastic! Looking forward to Conquering India.

  32. Thanks, Lisa! I hope that everyone likes it.

  33. A menage theme with werewolf shifters would be would be wonderful.

  34. How about a little Fae (as in gypsy magic) to add to the mix? Although I do like 3 ways, I also love a man that doesn’t share so that is a very hard choice for me. Conquering India sounds great!!!

  35. Thanks, Mitzi:) I would love to do a menage paranormal some day. It would not quite fit in with the rest of the Harmless books, but I do like the idea of werewolf shifters.

  36. Sorry, that is what I get for answering emails with only a sip of coffee in me. I meant Sherry. Many apologies Sherry.

  37. Mitzi,
Not sharing comes up in A LIttle Harmless Obsession, lol. Evan might have participated in three ways, but he is just not about to share his woman, lol.

  38. I will always gravitate towards menage, with BDSM as a close second.

  39. Great interview, Melissa! I’d vote for straight contemporary–I love the others, too, but that’s my first love, so to speak 🙂

  40. Miranda,
THANKS! That seems to be the favorite of most readers:)

  41. Fedora! Thanks so much. I have plenty of straight romances coming out, including the next Harmless after Obsession, A Little Harmless Addiction:)

  42. I like contemporary with a menage thrown in for my spicy reads.

  43. Hi Melissa,
I am in agreement about the Menage but with a m/f/m element to it.
    Congrats on the new release.
    Carol L.
