Review: Crux by Moira Rogers

Southern Arcana Book 1

Mackenzie Brooks is on the run. A month ago, a man named Marcus showed up on her doorstep and started telling her about a magical world and how they were destined to be together and create the most important child ever. Like any normal person would do, Mackenzie showed him the door and tried to put the incident out of her mind. However, it wasn’t that easy since Marcus has decided to kidnap her.

When Mackenzie reaches New Orleans and lands a job at Mahalia’s bar, she starts to consider staying. She has a steady job, a safe place to stay, a great boss that is becoming a friend, and the super-sexy Jackson Holt is showing an interest in her. When the thugs show up and Jackson has to save her, Mackenzie’s world is rocked again. That steady job? Turns out many of her customers are magical. That great boss? Daughter of the Alpha werewolf. And super sexy Jackson? A spell caster. And now they are telling her that she’s a shifter, too. Mackenzie’s reaction:

“Maybe I need a psychiatrist. Or a padded room. If I can’t have those, I suppose a drink will do.”

“Nah, you’re okay,” he assured her. “Well, nothing some bourbon won’t cure.” He walked over to the small cabinet in the corner, and withdrew a glass and a crystal decanter. “A little, a lot or ‘bring me the bottle, already’?”

When he turned, it was to find Mackenzie watching him with shocked blue eyes. “How many bottles do you have over there?”

Crux is the perfect blend of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. We get to watch the relationship between Mackenzie and Jackson develop from a hot infatuation to true love while still having plenty of action and suspense. There are scenes in this book that will make you laugh out loud, hold your breath in anticipation, cause you to need a cold shower, and one that will break your heart. I bought this book when it was first released in digital and I will be buying it again when it comes out in print on January 5, 2010. This is one for my keeper shelf and I’m looking forward to many enjoyable rereads.
